The need for greater clarity

BrexitAt present our understanding of what a post Brexit world will look like is becoming even more confused as Politicians and ex-Civil Servants attempt to explain matters using simple metaphors. Few hungry people would turn down a packet of crisps, and there are many well fed, busy people who might prefer to grab a packet on the run, rather than sit down and enjoy a three course meal, despite the appeal of the full meal. In the same way there are many businesses that would certainly benefit from improved trade relations with other countries outside of the EU, but taking our economy as a whole, not if we have to jettison our relationships with the EU. If the primary reason that Liam Fox wants to leave the EU is to establish trade with nations beyond the European Borders, perhaps he should be nominated as the next EU trade Commissioner and we should remain in the EU.

The idea that simply capturing number plates and sending the registered owners bills for their visit without the ability to search vehicles seems inconceivable when the prospect of different rules apply to goods and to people one either side of the border. If Boris is right that a simple congestion charge system can be established between the EU and the UK, then not only should he try persuading some of his opposite numbers in the US and Canada and in Mexico to use the same approach, but also he should explain to people in the UK how the congestion charge model will work in the context of this statement he made on May 26th 2016 “People have every right to question why we can’t control our borders. We need to answer those concerns by taking back control of those borders” The truth is that whatever Boris feels is achievable on the North of the Irish Border, the EU has got to be satisfied with what happens on the South of the same Border. Boris may accept that cameras and signs are all that is needed, but if the EU demands barriers and armed border officers, our Government is unable to deliver what we have been promised.
