A strange question from a local MP

HenryThis image is from ‘They work for You’ which publishes transcripts from Parliament whenever an MP speaks. Henry Smith asked this on Wednesday and he appears to be suggesting that Southern Water could have done a better job of protecting their region from Snow and Ice which led to an “unprecedented the level of leaks and bursts we’ve seen,” according to Dr Simon Earl, the operations director of South East Water. It may well be that Henry knows something that suggests otherwise, that the problem really is down to Southern Water. It is certainly the case that the water supply to Crawley was cut off intentionally to help reduce the water leaking out as pipes began to thaw and also to ensure there was some water available for the following morning when the demand would be greatest. In a large system with many leaks, this seems to make sense. It is also possible that Henry is referring to problems over many years due to a lack of investment in the water infrastructure, something that he could have referred to had he taken the time to spell out his concern. Balcombe TunnelOn the other hand there is a slim chance that his question was simply to ensure that his constituents knew he was speaking up on their behalf. This winter weather has certainly impacted more than just water supplies as this 8ft Icicle in the Balcombe Tunnel between Brighton and Gatwick indicates. On the 1st March this led to train cancellations and severe delays. Perhaps the previous entry from Henry Smith was demanding that Network Rail better prepare for the Winter weather better to ensure that his constituents can travel without delays?
