The Zuckerberg response sounds familiar

Hold to AccountThe anger expressed by Damian Collins MP over the refusal by Mark Zuckerberg to attend a hearing of the Select Committee at the House of Commons is understandable in the context of the authority of Parliament and the role played by Facebook in our nation. That said the person selected by Zuckerberg to attend may well be a better person to explain what has gone wrong with the data releases. However it sound ever so familiar to hear that a senior person who was invited to speak to the nation through Parliament has refused to do so. Time after time after time listening to the radio or watching TV we are told that the Government or the Opposition turned down the request to send someone to speak about a matter that was being discussed. No one would confuse the importance of Parliament with the role of broadcasters, although only this weekend a senior Politician speaking on Television pointed out how broadcasters hold the Government to account on matters of public concern. Sadly this does rather depend on how willing the Ministers are to be held to account, a bit like how willing Mark Zuckerberg is to be held to account by Parliament!
