Yarls Wood needs closure, not a 5 year contract

Yarls WoodIt is concerning that the NHS Trust referred to as ‘Arden & Greater East Midlands’ has just announced a five year contract opportunity to provide: “Psychological Wellbeing Service for Yarl’s Wood Immigration Removal Centre” Of course the NHS is not responsible for determining how long Yarls Wood should operate, but the fact that the contract on offer is for 5 years, indicates that the Trust does not expect the centre to be closed any time soon. Very few people whose views are similar to mine want to see detention centre’s such as Yarls Wood kept open beyond today, let alone for the next five years. No one who is about to be removed from the UK rightly or wrongly, needs to be transferred to a venue that is organised on the same lines as a prison, unless of course they have broken the law and been prosecuted. By the same token, I would have assumed that most people whose views are that the UK Government is about to take back control of our borders, would judge the need for a place like Yarls Wood and the other nine centres is now going to diminish significantly, even if they support its current existence. Indeed closing Yarls Wood is surely part of the Brexit dividend. The cost of the contract will be determined by the tender, but it has been set at a maximum cost of £210,400 so if it is comparable to those contracts in the other nine centres, this one element of our immigration provision costs the nation over £2m. Money that could be better spent on caring for such people in the communities where they should be based!
