As Amber Rudd and her team are being put through the wringer for their complete failure to deal in an adequate way with the Windrush scandal under her leadership and that of her predecessor, let us not forget that the many people impacted by this terrible series of events are merely a tip to a much larger iceberg. It was noticeable that her neighbour in constituency terms, Nicholas Soames stated in Parliament on Thursday referring to Amber “Will my right hon. Friend be assured that she has the total support of Conservative Members in trying to resolve a very difficult legacy issue? Does she agree that dealing with the Windrush generation, who are entirely entitled to be here, is not the same thing at all, as Labour Members try to say, as removing illegal immigrants?”
The problem with the system is that immigrants, both those who are here legally and illegally are being treated in an appalling manner. As the tweet above shows, the impact on communities is devastating and it is vital that our Government sorts itself out. Such a view is not limited to people like the Reverend Canon Dr. Rosemarie Mallett who tweeted this message, nor Nick Baines who is the Bishop of Leeds who retweeted it, but even the United Nations are now raising concerns, primarily based on the way we are handling cases in London through the Metropolitan Police, but on Monday our Government has invited E. Tendayi Achiume, the UN’s special rapporteur on racism to come and spend time till the 11th May to see for himself how our nation is handling such matters. This report explains that the UN believes our nation to be impacted by ‘Structural Racism’. Many of us would agree that this is the case and it is deep within the heart of our Government processes and Amber Rudd does not have the confidence of many people outside of her cosy party of 90,000 or so people, and one suspects that some within are also not confident in her capacity to run the department.
