One of the ten MEPs in the South East who I usually disagree with has at last written an article about the 2016 EU referendum that I found I could understand and partly agree with. His name is Daniel Hannan and he is a Conservative so he has written this piece for the Conservative Home website on the 10th May where he stated: “I had assumed that, by now, we’d have reached a broad national consensus around a moderate form of withdrawal that recognised the narrowness of the result….Obviously, no one gets 100 per cent of what they want in a situation like this”
He then spoke a few days later on 14th May on Daily Politics and argued for a second referendum. Now to be fair his argument for a second referendum was specifically if MPs vote for us to remain in the Customs Union, but this same argument clearly explains why we need a second referendum irrespective of what MPs vote for and the Government negotiates.
All of our elected representatives are entitled to their views just like all of us are entitled to be represented in a meaningful way. I look forward to Daniel joining the groups of people who like me and him want to see a final way for society to back the way forward (or reject it) following the referendum on 23rd June 2016.
