A scary headline – that speaks of a double disaster!

EUThe image shown here with the headline is from yesterdays Telegraph posting on Facebook. It would be a silly mistake to assume that one headline on any newspaper is reliable, however taken in two parts and then read together this should call on all people, however they voted on 23rd June 2 years ago, to consider if our departure will make sense and to call on Theresa May and her Government to find an alternative. A plan B even at this late stage.

Part 1 – These are dark days for Brexit

The idea that our nation is in good shape and understands where it is going would be laughable in most settings. That said it would be something that people like Fox, Johnson, Dorries, Duncan-Smith and Rees-Mogg would attempt to persuade us of. The fact is that the national newspaper that is deeply supportive of Brexit is conceding that where we are now is in a place of dark days. The most likely view would be that they are referring to the dark days of winter and in due course the Spring will arrive. However to refer to a recent quote from Taylor Swift “And then the cold came, the dark days when fear crept into my mind. You gave me all your love and all I gave you was goodbye…”

Part 2 – The EU is in much greater trouble than we are

On a more serious note than the Taylor Swift quote, when the debates were taking place in the run up to the referendum I took a line which I still believe in. My judgment was and is that the EU like any Government agency is deeply inefficient and there is evidence of corruption within it. However this is no different to our own Government. To pretend otherwise is both naïve and ignores the fact that it was our Government that played a major part in helping to shape the EU in its transition from the EEC. However having no Government at a national or at international level is much worse than having an inefficient body like the UK Government and the EU or the UN. Anyone wanting evidence of this only needs to look at the land which is referred to as Israel and Palestine. Until there is a meaningful and credible agreement between the Jewish state and Palestinian people, there will be so much pain and anguish and death that any prospect of a meaningful quality of life on both sides of the tall wall will be non existent. So remaining in the EU, providing our own Government is willing to reform itself and bring about reform in the EU is the best course of action. Clearly as we have seen recently in the case of the House of Lords, our Government is unwilling to make any real changes for the better so the reform will not come along quickly. However our nation is not the only one that wants to see reform in the EU. The alternative however as the headline suggests is that if the EU is in such deep trouble, that no doubt whether we are members or not, our nation will suffer very harshly. It was for this reason that I felt that our departure would be a tragic mistake. That if we left the EU would collapse and the cost would take centuries, not decades to pay for the action of our departure.
