Our Government is like a bad naïve parent

BrokenshireObserving  James Brokenshire on Marr this morning helps to demonstrate how our Government is heading at high speed into a very narrow culdesac over its wishes to achieve Brexit.  He is asked what attitude this Government has towards Business, in the light of comments by Johnson and Hunt in recent days. He responds by claiming that the Government wishes to listen to businesses. This is in itself naïve because whilst the Tories constantly listen to their funders and their MPs and Lords who claim to be running businesses, they do absolutely nothing to listen to the rest of the business community. As I have written before even Parliament is very limited in the way it hears from businesses and MPs that attend Chambers of Commerce or other business networks do so to be heard, not to listen. So back to the programme and Marr states that businesses overwhelmingly want a single market approach to the EU for trading after we leave the EU and Brokenshire immediately denies this is something that the Government is willing to consider. Later on in the interview when the discussion was a focus on house building, James was asked how house builders could improve their approach, he called on them to be more transparent in their decision making. Now most politicians understand that businesses cannot lay everything on the table without a risk that their business will suffer because their competitors may gain access to the data, whereas most people understand that governments in a democracy must lay their plans and intentions on the table if they want to be treated with respect and re-elected. The problem which is exposed through this interview is that our Government is acting like a naïve parent which tells its children they want to listen, but then refuses to consider the views that are expressed, and then call on their children to behave in a manner that they as parents would never consider demonstrating themselves.
