A short list of very limited priorities

TrumpIn the light of the NATO summit which Trump and May have just attended it is perhaps understandable that they are going to extend the focus of that event on the Armed Forces by spending time visiting a secret place to watch manoeuvres by American and British fighters in the UK. The inevitable meetings with May at Chequers and the Queen at Windsor leave room for one more event according to the publicity which is a black tie dinner for large British and American businesses. It is hard to see how such an event will add much value either to the Politicians or the Businesses who are attending, unless of course Presidents and Prime Ministers can issue contracts and assist in procurement whilst working out which fork to use for each course. One imagines that American businesses such as the two Asset Management organisations Blackrock and Blackstone that have been listed will add no value at all to our nation apart from choosing which businesses to invest in and it is hard to imagine British drinks company Diageo or Construction related Arup need to meet with the President to increase their market share in the USA. As for racing car manufacturer McLaren????

It would be fantastic if in the meeting Trump had been invited to see how we avoid the need to bleach our chickens and add hormones to our beef, and perhaps if he was invited to meet with people that his travel ban is denying access to the USA. Alternatively perhaps instead of the large companies at the black tie dinner if he was allowed to see some of our high tech developments at a University or Business Park, or other businesses that are not yet engaged in International trade.

It is of course clear that he wants to spend more time on his own Golf Course than visiting elements of the British Economy or visiting charities or communities. However bearing in mind the nonsense he spouts forth when the TV cameras are on, perhaps the benefit of the golf days works well for us as well as for him.
