My MEP Daniel has written a piece in today’s Telegraph which argues for us to accept a No Deal departure from the EU because his party leader “has gone as far as any British leader could go to accommodate Brussels – indeed arguably further”. Quite apart from the immense amount of money and social collapse such a stupid action would cost us as a nation, what Mr Hannan seems to be ignoring or failing to point out is at least two matters.
The first is that there are potentially many alternative leaders both within the world of politics and outside of it that could achieve a much better outcome for our nation. Where of course Daniel may be right is to argue that this is the best a Tory Party Leader could do, because rather than being a leader of Britain, they are leading a party of MPs and Tory Funders whose demands are very different to the rest of the nation. So perhaps before Daniel argues for a No Deal for the whole of Britain made up of 67m people, he could admit that the 100,000 or so Tories in the UK should not be in a position to cost our nation Quadrillions of pounds over the next 50 years.
The second aspect which Daniel has ignored is that our decision to leave the EU was taken at a time when many people were persuaded by lies and by overspending from campaigning organisations to vote for outcomes they did not really understand. Equally there were many other people who did not have the opportunity to vote. In total the Referendum on almost every criteria was a failure in terms of democracy. It is clear that before we leave the EU or indeed remain within it, that a clear form of democracy is applied to our situation and we get an outcome that is without dispute and indeed makes sure that our plans for the future are not based on a 4% marginal decision and therefore open to challenge from generations already at voting age, let alone those not yet old enough to vote.
