Rona Fairhead is suffering from a deep blindspot

220px-Lady_Fairhead_(cropped)Speaking this morning on Radio 4 Today, Rona Fairhead the Minister of State for Trade and Export Promotion made two very clear statements regarding businesses and indeed society as a whole and then failed to deal with the very evident blind spot that she clearly is suffering from. Her statements were the following:

1. That the Government must plan for every possible eventuality, post the Brexit referendum

2. That businesses need a stable and certain future

Both of these statements are clear indications that like in any other setting, where a major decision that was taken is based on a 2% margin, that if No Deal, and a Good Deal are two of the options that must be planned for, so too is Remaining. As she stated when interviewed by Justin Webb, Rona Fairhead has worked in business for 30 years and in that time has clearly dealt with situations where Shareholders and Board Members as a whole are unsure of the way forward and have voted marginally for one outcome or another, and in such situations the business must also consider reversing the marginal decision once more information about the way forward emerges and can be placed in front of the board or the shareholders. During the interview, Justin never mentioned reversing the referendum but when she felt he was challenging her point of view, that was the defensive comment she made, that he must not press the idea of a return to the referendum. This blind spot in her thinking is clearly acting psychologically as a present option, yet she is refusing to consider it. Anyone in business who did not consider revisiting a decision that was made so marginally would ultimately be deemed fit for leadership. Bearing in mind that Rona claims that her policies are led by businesses, she needs to address the fact that along with the rest of society, that many businesses are commited to remaining in the EU and that society has changed significantly in the last 26 months in the light of the failings of her Government and now is the time to revisit the way forward.
