Overseas Aid and Business opportunities are very different matters

h=300The suggestion made by Theresa May that the £4bn of UK aid being promised to four African Nations could lead to benefits for British Businesses is deeply disturbing. The purpose of overseas aid, just like the purpose of aid funds spent in UK communities is to invest in the lives and local structures in such a way that they are able to grow their social and economic confidence and strength. It should fall into the category known as community development which is the very opposite of Imperialism. Of course when a nation makes donations it is inevitable that their profile is going to be raised as a result and such a profile raising will improve the prospects for the national businesses willing to work in the communities being supported, but that is a marginal or superficial benefit which is not what was being referred to by Mrs May. The suggestion that the donations will benefit UK businesses is from the same school of thought that tells a political party donor that their ‘gift’ will influence policy decisions and line them up for state based public honours. This is clear corruption and if UK society leaders do not stand up and call for some integrity, our nation will be facing a very bad future. Clearly one of the reasons behind this statement is to attempt to satisfy those UK residents that believe it is wrong to give funds to other people. However such a concern needs to be addressed full on by political and societal leaders who must stop the  Government from pandering to such criticisms in a sly and dishonest way and instead use their influence to provide leadership across the nation.
