It seems unlikely we will remain in the EU post March 2019, but as with all matters it makes sense to plan for every possibility. Ever since the referendum was planned for, I took the line that remaining in the EU was the best thing for our nation and indeed for the whole of Europe. However remaining in an unreformed EU made no sense at all. The challenge then is begin to identify reforms that are needed which will make the EU more responsive to the needs of our nation. Arguably this example does not fully explain the value of the reform, primarily because Daniel lost the vote. However he as the first name on the Tory list in the South East of England has made it clear that when it comes to the campaigning for the vote, because the Tories will always gain enough votes for at least one MEP, that he could go on holiday during the campaign and still get re-elected. The same applies to one of my other MEPs, Nigel Farage who spends his time on the radio, in the USA sucking up to Donald and has just gone on a tour to Australia. All of these things are distractions from his role of MEP. Yet there is no sense of accountability to explain what he intends to do. Although Dan Hannan is more focused on the European Parliament, he clearly fails to take the time to check with people on the best outcome for British musicians. That he has written a nonsense tweet is irrelevant, what matters is that he is ignoring the needs of his constituents when it comes to the best way to vote on a very specific matter that is not something that any MEP should decide on their own. In any case Dan also writes lots of articles for American newspapers so he too needs to make such declarations part of his accountability towards his electors. So the reform is to remove the list system which give the political parties control over who is at the top of the list and leaves voters to decide how many votes each party gets and instead call on the electors to choose each of the candidates they would wish to see elected. This will improve the prospects of Independent candidates getting elected and also make each MEP much more accountable to their electors.
