Let’s focus on the work that Politicians carry out on our behalf

Project Fear 1This stupid tweet and newspaper headline both come from Daniel Hannan, one of the highest profile MEPs amongst the 73 UK based members of the European Parliament. The fact that within a week he is willing to criticise others for so called Project fear and then write about the fear he has of a Labour Party getting elected by the British Public shows just how ridiculous he is. However his high profile comes about primarily because of his extra curricular activity in writing lots of articles and appearing on TV both in the UK and USA. However whilst he is certainly not the least effective MEP in our nation, he comes close to the bottom of the pile. One way of assessing how effective MPs and MEPs are is the number of votes they participate in. Based on the Parliamentary period which began in July 2014 out of 749 MEPs there are 12 whose voting behaviour places them in a poorer place to that of Daniel. One is an Irish member who has never voted in over 4 years and he is closely followed by a Finnish member who has voted in 2.07% of the votes. The third person on the list is a South East colleague of Daniel Hannan, Nigel Farage whose voting record is a major leap upwards at 38.75% of the votes. Another member of the bottom 12 is Paul Nuttall who voted 51.9% of the time. The number of votes that Daniel Hannan has bothered to participate in is 62.47% which whilst nearly twice as many as Nigel is a long way short of the votes placed by the top British Labour MEP Wajid Khan who is 40th on the MEP list with 98.48% of votes. The next two highest British MEPs are also Labour Party members, Lucy Anderson at 66th and Julie Ward at 69th, both participating in more than 97% of the votes throughout the last 4 years. It seems vital that even though we are shortly due to leave the EU, that our approach to elected representatives focuses on their work on our behalf, not their work to fulfil their own objectives.
