Rather than trying to communicate with the rest of the public, Theresa has written in todays Sunday Express, stating: “You, the British people, voted to leave. And then, in the 2017 General Election, 80% of you voted for MPs who stood on manifestos to respect that referendum result. You have delivered your instructions. Now it is our turn to deliver for you.” Now of course given that the SNP who opposed the referendum result were overwhelmingly voted for in Scotland in 2017, it is only that their nation includes a relatively small numbers of voters, that prevents Theresa’s comment being challenged. On a different line but with a similar outcome, her in England because the two main dominant parties chose to place departure on their manifestos it is hard to imagine anything different. Liberal Democrats are continuing to recover from their punishment for getting into a coalition with the Tories and the number of votes for Green candidates was modest outside of Brighton. However given that the Conservatives were the people who retained the greatest number of constituencies outside of Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales the manifesto of the Tories is clearly what Theresa is wanting us to consider:
“So now more than ever, Britain needs a strong and stable government to get the best Brexit deal for our country and its people. Now more than ever, Britain needs strong and stable leadership to make the most of the opportunities Brexit brings for hardworking families. Now more than ever, Britain needs a clear plan”
“We need to deliver a smooth and orderly departure from the European Union”
“Under the strong and stable leadership of Theresa May, there will be no ideological crusades. The government’s agenda will not be allowed to drift to the right. Our starting point is that we should take decisions on the basis of what works”
“we are going to make sure Britain emerges from Brexit as a strong and united nation…. able to take a lead in the world to defend Britain’s interests”
“A United Kingdom shared prosperity fund, taken from the money coming back to the UK as we leave the EU, to reduce inequalities between communities across our four nations”
It seems to me that we are miles away from any of those statements and it is clearly very sad that Theresa May is telling the people of a certain political sector that the views of the rest of us are a breach of trust when in fact there are many of us who believe that she and her Cabinet are the people who are really breaching trust!
