As the media trawls through the problems caused by someone that the Cabinet claims is Gavin Williamson and who has apparently sworn on his children lives he was not guilty and MPs are demanding he is taken to Court, it would be easy to assume that, that press leak was the only problem facing Theresa and her Cabinet. However on Monday a debate took place on the theme of “Tuition Fees: EU Students”. The debate was convened by Angela Rayner who asked “To ask the Secretary of State for Education if he will make a statement on Government policy regarding tuition fees for EU students after the UK has left the European Union.” The response to her question from Chris Skidmore on his third sentence in was “Over the weekend, the media reported on a leaked Cabinet document discussing Government policy on EU student access to finance products for the 2020-21 academic year and beyond. At this time, I want to tell the House that no decision has yet been made on the continued access to student finance for EU students. Discussions at Cabinet level are ongoing and should remain confidential. I will make no comment on this apparent leak, which is deeply regrettable.”
It would appear that reports about Huawei which to be fair did focus on a major security and commercial matter was only one of the recent leaks and that leaks of policies that involve students and universities will potentially impact far more people than those focusing on a technology decision. The question then is how many more ex-Ministers will soon be arriving on the Tory backbenches?
The response from Chris did also state “The Government have repeatedly made it clear that we absolutely value international exchange and collaboration in education and training as part of our vision for a global Britain. We believe that the UK and European countries should continue to give young people and students the chance to benefit from each other’s world-leading universities post exit.”
My own view is that unless the issue of these many leaks is dealt with, we are facing a Government that is completely hopeless and needs replacing as a matter of some urgency!
