The need to supply large sums of funds to enable police forces to recover some or all of their losses based on the last 9 years is clear to anyone who spends time talking to senior officers or reading the documents published that disclose the impact of the cuts. So when Boris promised prior to his election as Tory party leader to released £1bn to recruit 20,000 police officers, although it raised a number of questions, it was assumed that he had a strategy, even if it was pretty basic. However as one of the images above makes clear, when Crawley MP Henry Smith asked a reasonable question about Sussex Police on Thursday 25th July, the only day so far that Boris has been in Parliament as our Prime Minister, it was clear that Boris did not have an answer and he was not even able or willing to explain what the process for determining the way forward would be. The tweets above the Parliamentary record all appeared at the same time a few days later when clearly Boris had been able to reflect on the question raised by Henry and had joined Priti Patel in a meeting with senior Police Officers and Police and Crime Commissioners. Most people would imagine that this would be the one location to resolve the complex issues that lie behind the very simple question that Henry had asked. However it appears that in fact Boris wants the public to answer the question by twitter and this will lead to all sorts of challenges, particularly when their answers fall into conflict with the views of the police and politicians that Boris wants to support!
