Anyone who is arguing that children are being abused needs to be carefully responded to, and so my blog this morning is an attempt to help reassure Douglas McWilliams and indeed Konstanin Kisin that in fact there is no concern to be raised beyond the need to protect the reputation and credibility of the children who are campaigning for our earth to be protected. This of course creates a challenge for all of us. Of course Konstanin is right in the sense that protesting is not the only approach we all need to take and learning more about the impact of our environmental footprint is crucial. If as he states he cannot because he is not a scientist, that he “don’t know how much climate change is caused by human behaviour” then he needs to be reassured that finding out more about climate change does not need to be limited to scientists. On the other hand the politicisation of children is something a lot more challenging. The threats expressed to Greta Thurnberg because of her exposure to International political settings are certainly something one could have concerns about. However for the large groups of children and their families to spend time demanding that our Government and the Governments across a range of nations improve matters is something we should applaud. One wonders if Douglas needs to spend a bit longer listening to some of the children who are campaigning as this will certainly help to reduce the concern he is expressing if he is genuinely concerned that they are being abused. My own experience is that children do not get involved in matters they are not concerned about and my own children who are in their twenties are still very concerned about the impact of climate change on our planet caused by us. On the other hand if the tweet from Douglas and the statement from Konstanin are an indirect way of attacking the behaviour of these children then that is a different matter altogether.
