It is encouraging that Conservative Central Command have put the views of SMEs at the forefront of their campaign today. Whilst I personally do not share the desire of the 5,000 businesses featured on todays Telegraph that David Cameron and George Osborne should be given a chance to finish the job begun in 2010, their voices definitely need to be heard. The initials SME represent a broad range of businesses. The Micro Enterprises with less than 10 employees are very different to the Small Businesses that employ up to 50 people, and the Medium sized businesses which employ up to 250 people and have a turnover of up to £50M. A great deal has been said and written about the need for Government to procure 25% of its services from SMEs, an innovation recommended at the beginning of the coalition Government. The real challenge is that far too much of that 25% has been procured from some of the larger Medium sized businesses and there is plenty of evidence in my own work of barriers that prevent Micro Enterprises from being considered for business opportunities for which they are eminently suited. I am grateful to Baroness Karren Brady for getting our sector onto the front page of the Telegraph as the economy of the UK depends on these businesses (all of them, not just 5,000) being treated seriously by whichever Parties form the next Government. However not all of us do support the Conservative Party, whatever the media might be implying.
