The news from last week that David Cameron wants the nation to create a memorial for the victims from Tunisia and todays reflections on the 10th Anniversary of 7/7 are vital ways of reminding all of us that what has happened must not be repeated. The challenge is to move beyond such symbols of remembrance to find ways of reducing the likelihood of such events being repeated. We all need to do more to get to know our neighbours, working with them to address issues that arise in our communities so that together we can reduce the causes of mistrust and isolation. I spent yesterday afternoon with our Chief Constable and community activists, discussing how public agencies and the voluntary sector could do more to help create strong or resilient communities. The context for our discussion was that of the shrinking finances for the public sector, but on reflection perhaps had we been a bit more sensitive to todays date, we might have also touched on how strong communities are also better places for reducing conflict. It is a great deal easier to make a big gesture such as proposing a memorial, or attending services of remembrance than it is to dig deep into our own resources and comfort and make an effort to get to know our neighbours who may need our assistance. I am certain that today, many good words, tweets and postings will acknowledge the events of 7/7. Unfortunately I am just as certain that tomorrow, the Prime Minister and his Labour opposite number will stand two sword lengths from one another and hurl insults and sarcasm about with abandon. If David Cameron and Harriet Harman don’t understand the link between their insults and aggressive behaviour, as expressed throughout the long General Election campaign and illustrated in Prime Ministers Questions on the TV and radio every week, and the causes of distrust and misunderstanding in our neighbourhoods then we are in a big mess!
