The NHS and its Apps

images3KW3N2SMAccording to Women’s Hour programme on Monday the NHS currently provides a list of Apps for weight loss on one of its websites. The Apps allow users to enter basic details of height and gender and a target weight. The Apps then inform the user how many calories to consume each day in order to achieve the weight set as the goal. This is a valuable service for those of us who are overweight, however as Jane Garvey and her guests discussed, the Apps also allow users to set target weights which are well below the level that are deemed to be healthy, enabling people with serious eating disorders to be aided by Apps listed by the NHS. Jane Garvey asked what could be done to correct this aberration. It is surely possible to ensure that target weights below what the NHS consider to be healthy for individuals not to be set by any Apps that it is promoting. It won’t prevent people with eating disorders from attempting to reduce their weight to dangerous levels, but it will ensure that the NHS is not complicit in their abuse.
