This morning is the beginning of Parliament Week, and an opportunity to renew efforts to engage with our MP. The website for Parliament Week only lists one event in Sussex which is ‘Ask Your MP’ being hosted by the Grace Eyre Foundation and Brighton and Hove Speak Out. The event takes place on Thursday Morning at 10.30 at the Grace Eyre building. The organisers have invited the three MPs from Brighton & Hove to respond to questions that they were first asked in the run up to the General Election in May. Although Parliament Week begins today, it was preceded by a debate on Friday in Parliament by the UK Youth Parliament. We are still at the stage where the debate in the House of Commons to agree to release the debating chamber to the Youth Parliament is opposed by some Parliamentarians. It is clear that there is a long way to go. It is barely a week since Friday 6th November when the Government used a filibuster to prevent backbenchers in all parties from voting for the NHS to begin to use drugs that are no longer within their Patent. This is a move that supporters argue will save a lot of money for the NHS. Nevertheless Alistair Burt spoke for nearly half an hour to “filibuster” the proposed law which is not supported by the Government and hence it only has a limited amount of time to be debated in Parliament, or had to be shelved. Let us hope that this weeks focus on Democracy will persuade our Government to change its response to such events. The Will of Parliament should not be frustrated by the Government.
