In the last two days I have seen postings from two well known commentators calling for a new form of Politics. The call from Chris Patten on Newsnight follows on from the call by Gary Lineker on twitter. They both seem to be reflecting a desire to end the dominance of the two major parties which was at the heart of the progressive alliance which made substantial in roads into the vote in key seats during the vote last month. I personally believe we need to see a break through in terms of the confidence of people in electing Independent candidates as Members of Parliament. This is a tough call, my good friend Paul Sanderson stood in the election with a high level of personal support in the constituency, reflected by the fact that he secured over 2000 votes. He nearly secured 5% which would have secured his deposit. However he needed to double or even treble that result to come up as a credible competitor in electoral terms against Nick Gibb in Bognor and Littlehampton. As we prepare for another election within the next 3 – 21 months it is vital that the views of Patten, Lineker and those like me who believe in opening up the democratic system to Independents like Sanderson are allowed to enter into a wider debate. There is no reason why people like Paul could not be adopted by the next wave of the progressive alliance. However that will take courage from those who are members of the alliance from the safety (or corruption) of a political party.
