News that Eurosceptic Tory MPs plan to call for a vote of no confidence in Theresa May if she is willing to consider remaining in the Customs Union show how deeply broken their moral compass is. Of course fractionally over half the nation that chose to vote in the referendum (or were allowed to), voted to leave the EU – 13/25. However many of these did vote to leave after they had been reassured that our nation would remain in the Customs Union or that whatever the arrangements that would be agreed, that we would retain the benefits of the equivalence of a customs union arrangement. Equally many were told that the nature of the relationship between Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK would not be compromised, that the Good Friday agreement would be kept secure and that the border between Northern Ireland and Southern Ireland and between Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK would not be compromised. All of these reasons argue in favour of us retaining our place in the Customs Union or finding an equivalent arrangement. Even the Labour Party, and their supporters are in favour of some form of customs union. However this is not why the Eurosceptic Tories have lost their moral compass. After all they only want to represent their own point of view within the party. The reason they have lost it is that in the chaos over Skripal, the challenge over Police Funding, the decision to bomb Syria without Parliamentary approval and now the disastrous arrangements over the Windrush generation, all these are good reasons to vote to remove Theresa May from her position as leader of their party. However these men and women are Tories and would defend these indefensible situations if they were the last issues on the earth, but the moment some pragmatism begins to show over Brexit, and they are prepared to remove all of the life belts and life rafts from Theresa Mays residence, and at the same time direct her towards the iceberg which is facing our whole society.
