Andrew Tyrie was an MP with mixed capabilities. He was first rate at challenging the Government (his own party) when it came to matters of financial credibility and was Chair of the Treasury Select Committee from 2010 to 2017. However as a constituency MP he chose not to meet constituents unless they were wealthy or powerful people. That may not have been the case in 1997 when he was first elected to such a safe seat, but when I had discussions with residents in 2011 and 2012 it became clear he was a complete failure compared to several other MPs in Sussex. He was of the same school of MPs as Peter Bottomley who also refused to hold constituent surgeries, yet was willing to stand up against his own party. When I worked for Churches Together in Sussex I had the privilege of organising meetings between senior church leaders and both of these men, so I have seen how willing they are to meet with other people who are leaders of their own communities, yet I have also met with people who have been denied such access in the case of them both. Irrespective of his successes and failures, it is deeply concerning that Andrew is the Government’s preferred candidate for the next Chair of the Competition and Markets Authority. Such roles need people who understand the world outside of politics. Although Andrew stepped down last June, he is still fully enmeshed in how political parties work, rather than how real businesses operate. However his party are clearly committed to providing jobs for the boys as is Westminster more widely.
