The news over the last 24 hours whilst the Cabinet was scheduled to meet and discuss the way of leaving the EU indicated some very odd comments from various sources. These included a rumour that Boris Johnson might resign if the Government adopted the Customs Partnership which has now been thrown onto the scrap heap. The odd aspect was that the news reported a denial of this threat to resign by Boris as explained by his spokesperson. This seems strange because he should not have been using the spokespeople in the Foreign Office as this related to his personal points of view. Does this mean that Boris has a personal spokesperson as an MP? or is he abusing the purpose of the team who represent the Government in the Foreign Office.
Secondly there was an interview which was broadcast at Noon on Radio 4 which involved Nigel Evans. Nigel is the MP for Ribble Valley who back in 2016 called the BBC the ‘Brexit Bad Corporation’ in the House of Commons so his willingness to speak to them seems strange. However he pointed out how frustrated he is when the media and commentators attempt to interpret why electors including those in his constituency chose to vote to Leave and how some of these reasons have now changed. He then went on to explain that he knew full well why his Constituents voted to Leave and that they are still fully committed to doing so. The strange and frankly deeply dishonest element of this is to suggest 100% of his constituents agree with one another and that they have all spoken to Nigel to confirm this is the case. On the other hand if this is the case perhaps we need to ask Nigel to run the country as we desperately need to achieve a level of unity throughout the nation so that whatever the outcome of the negotiations and the final decision by Parliament and hopefully by us the people, that our decision is unanimous.
Finally there was the interview by the pseudo statesman who heads up the European Research Group which is clearly a Group of people funded by our taxes but they are not European supporters and they don’t carry out much research, because their solutions to Brexit so far are simply to criticise other solutions. However Jacob Rees Mogg explained that the Customs Partnership which appeared to make sense when first proposed, was clearly flawed after the full details had been published and read by his members. Surely if he and his colleagues really believe that we should be involved in this decision making, they should be distributing the document outside of Parliament. On the other hand if he believes that it is the Government and not Parliament as a whole that should make the final decisions, then he should not even be reading the document himself. The truth is that Jacob wants to have a major influence on a decision which is then decided on behalf of Parliament and the Nation by the Cabinet, but not until they have agreed to do as the ERG demands.
Perhaps these behaviours are not strange after all, we did elect these three men and the other folk in their shadows.
