One of the reasons why I have serious concerns about NAto is that it is dominated by one nation, which happens to be the most powerful nation in the world as things stand but with its current leadership is a very destructive nation. The truth is that in 15 months they may have a new President and if so this could improve matters, but equally in 15 months we could face another 4 years of Trump and this could be deeply troubling. During that time (the next 5 years and a bit) the power of China will have grown and a number of other developing nations. Assuming the UK will have left the EU our impact will be a very much less than has been the case for the last 72 years since we formed the Treaty of Dunkirk with France which laid out the foundations for NATO. The reality is that if we leave the EU that the EU will also lose some of their strength and so our departure will have led to a significant reduction in the role of Europe over the next 10-15 years until a new version of EU is established and we have joined it. By then the next President but one will have arrived and China will be the nation we need to work with if we are to set out to avoid wars, but perhaps much more importantly the issues that lie behind the terrorism conflicts will need to be addressed and the current NATO is not capable of this. So whatever the next 30 years will be like, unless NATO or its successor sets out a very different approach, it will leave a very big hole that will need to be filled!
