I am personally very disappointed that large numbers of people in the Labour Party have acted as if the departure of Jeremy Corbyn was essential for the wellbeing of their party or indeed for the rest of our nation. He has worked very hard and achieved a great deal for our nation even though I have disagreed with some of what he has appeared to do. What cannot be ignored is that he was elected and re-elected by large numbers of people. It is equally disturbing to see immediate opposition to his replacement by Keir Starmer by many people who supported Corbyn although like many other people, a female leader of the Labour Party would have been very inspiring for me. That said today is a vital way forward for their Party and it will enable our nation to benefit as well. It is clearly very disturbing that as soon as Keir and Angela took over the leadership of the party from Jeremy and John, that Boris Johnson wrote to their party and the other parties across our Parliament to ask for them to work together with his Party. My frustration is that he waited until today when he should have done it about 10 weeks ago for the benefit of our whole nation with COVID and arguably on 13th December for the credible way forward with our departure from the EU. It is clear that we need the whole of Parliament to work together and delaying such an approach till today is very frustrating. On the same matter whilst I did not want a letter from Boris Johnson, it seems very strange that his claim he was writing to us has so far failed to emerge in reality.
I am not a member or even a supporter of the Labour Party although for many years they were the only party I had voted for consistently. Nevertheless I value the hard work carried out by Jeremy Corbyn and John McDonnell over recent years and I equally value Keir Starmer and Angela Rayner. If these two people prove to do a better job under similar circumstances than their predecessors then we can all be very grateful for their election. If Boris Johnson uses this day and their election to begin to do a much better job of protecting our nation from the COVID-19 disaster with the help of the other parties then we can really look forward to a much better future than we had yesterday when he was refusing to engage with other parties.
