Two questions on Nurses and Paramedics Recruitment

Last Friday, one of the people in the House of Lords who is called Lord Robert of Llandudno and who is Roger Roberts asked two questions and both of the questions were responded by Lord Markham who is the Parliamentary Under Secretary for Health and Social Care and is Nick Markham who was born in Haywards Heath and who became a member of the House of Lords last year. The questions from Roger were “To ask His Majesty’s Government, further to the reply by Lord Markham on 11 May (HL Deb, col 1935), whether nurse recruitment will be part of the long-term workforce plan for the NHS.” and then “To ask His Majesty’s Government, further to the reply by Lord Markham on 11 May (HL Deb col 1935), whether they intend to recruit more paramedics to support increased capacity for ambulances.” and here are where the two responses for Nurses and Paramedics can be obtained. The settings from Nick are:

The Government has committed to publishing the Long Term Workforce Plan shortly. This will include projections for the number of doctors, nurses and other professionals that will be needed in 5, 10 and 15 years’ time, taking full account of improvements in retention and productivity. The plan will help ensure that we have the right numbers of staff, with the right skills to transform and deliver high quality services fit for the future.

Additional ambulance service capacity will largely be delivered through more crew hours on the road and through an increase in clinical capacity in control rooms. The number of National Health Service ambulance staff and support staff has increased by over 40% since 2010.

Thanks Ian. The question is how does the Gov. intend to deliver on these plans, which are ‘long term’ I note. It was a big mistake to cancel the nurses’ bursaries, making it more expensive to train, thus landing them with debt before they’ve started. Paramedics are undervalued, they have a skill sets which greatly exceed those of their predecessors the ambulance men. They deserve higher pay which would attract more people. Thank you for all your posts Ian, I learn a lot!
